A new air separation unit (ASU) commissioned at the Feruka refinery in Zimbabwe will meet the country’s high demand for medical oxygen and reduce the cost of importing oxygen and industrial gases, reports the Zimbabwe Independent.
The plant, launched yesterday (23 August 2021) by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will be capable of producing 20 tonnes of oxygen gas, 16.5 tonnes of liquid oxygen and 2.5 tonnes of nitrogen per day.
The Zimbabwe Independent newspaper quoted Mnangagwa as saying during his keynote speech: “We are being told they can produce what we need in this country within a week.”
The ASU was launched in conjunction with a 3 MW (megawatt) solar power plant developed by Verify Engineering and purchased from India for US$10 million. The sector aims to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign aid and increase self-sufficiency ahead of a possible fourth wave of Covid-19.
